Concert Review: Twenty One Pilots' Emotional Roadshow, Raleigh

Publish date: 2024-06-05

Twenty One Pilots made a stop at Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, North Carolina on June 29, 2016, during their Emotional Roadshow World Tour.

Twenty One Pilots is a duo from Columbus, Ohio that consists of Tyler Joseph and Josh Dun. Over the past three years, their fanbase has grown exponentially. So much, that they are currently on their second world tour after releasing their last album on May 17, 2015.

This Wednesday, they brought their incredible show to Raleigh, North Carolina. The night before, they had a show on the other side of the state. No matter how late it was or how far away, many dedicated fans made the drive to secure their place in line for the show.

Some fans arrived the night before and chose to sleep in their cars while they waited to line up outside of the amphitheater. The morning of the concert, there was already large groups of people waiting to be let in either of the two gates, despite being there earlier than permitted.

When the time came for the tickets to be scanned there was a large rush, causing many who had been out there the majority of the day to lose their places in line. This was partially the fault of the fans who were concerned over where they would be once inside. As well as the fault of the staff of the amphitheater who were not properly prepared for the fans.

Once inside, the heat of the day was getting too many of the fans, especially the ones who were crammed into the pit. Several of the fans even had to be carried out of the pit due to dehydration not long after arriving. This is another issue the staff was not prepared enough for. In the pit, there was only one staff member who was bringing water to fans.

The concert had two opening bands which were Chef’Special and Mutemath. After the opening acts, the rest of the concert was put on delay due to severe weather in the area.

The fans were told the leave the venue and take shelter in any of the surrounding buildings. While many of the fans did listen, many others took that opportunity to rush to the front of the pit and not go someplace for their own safety. Even when the venue was cleared, fans were at the gates, ready to rush back inside. This only made it even more chaotic than the first time entering the venue.

Once the serve weather had passed, the concert was scheduled to resume at 9pm. Twenty One Pilots came on stage not long after and made everyone realize the wait was completely worth it.

The moment they both hit the stage, the crowd could feel the energy bursting off of them. It was obvious how genuinely happy they were the fans had stayed and waited out the storm to see them.

The began the concert with the intro to “Fairly Local” before continuing into “Heavydirtysoul”.

Not longer after their set began, the rain picked up again. The majority of the fans did not let that stop them from enjoying the show. In our own opinion, the rain made the experience even better.

They were both aware of the minimal time they had to perform due to Raleigh’s noise ordinance. However, they did not let this stop them from putting on an amazing show.

As they continued through their setlist, they played songs from their previous two albums before performing their most recent song. “Heathens”, is from the movie soundtrack for Suicide Squad and was performed fifth that night. This was only the second time they have performed this song live.

Near halfway through the show, they welcomed back their two opening acts to perform four covers with them. They performed a medley of “Twist and Shout”, “My Heart Will Go On”, “Love Yourself”, and “Jump Around.”

Afterward, they continued with “Ride”, “Stressed Out”, and “Guns for Hands.” Dun moved out into the crowd and the rain, letting their fans hold him and his drum set during “Ride.” Towards the end of “Guns for Hands”, Joseph got into a hamster ball and ran over the crowd in the pit.

They finished off the show with “Tear in My Heart” and “Car Radio” before moving onto their encore of “Trees.” During “Tear in My Heart”, Dun moved onto a drum set that the fans were supporting while it rained.

While the setlist was shorter than some of their previous shows, they still managed to perform nineteen songs and not go over the city’s time ordnance.

During the encore, Joseph jumped onto a platform, but instead of sticking his landing he fell onto it. He instantly recovered and got back on his feet to continue the song. Towards the end of the song, Joseph and Dun made their way into the edge of the crowd, allowing them to hold the duo up. During this, they finished the show with them both playing the drums while they were out in the rain that never hinting on letting up throughout their set.

Even though the rain caused issues, Joseph and Dun did not allow the weather to affect their moods or the show. During the delay, they took to Twitter to lighten the mood for their fans that were waiting for them.

At the end of the day, all of the chaos that happened did not matter once Twenty One Pilots came on stage.
