While his right ear was curable with surgery and tubes, treatment of his left ear was complicated by a benign tumor near the ossicles. As a junior in 2007, Barwin played special teams, as well as a backup tight end, playing in 12 games. He caught 31 passes for 399 yards and two touchdowns.
