Publish date: 2024-06-15

Matilda Gracia is a multi cultural singer/songwriter who is based in London. The rising songstress lives in London and is a half-Spanish/half-Irish blues/country singer. Her eclectic mix of nationalities blend together to create a unique sound that is exclusive to Gracia.

Her debut single ‘Player‘ is a fiery riposte to a former lover and it has gained major critical acclaim. Her we speak exclusively to Matilda Gracia about her background, UK country music, touring plans and much, much more;

You’re half Spanish, half Irish and based in London, how do you feel all these international influences impact your musical style?
I feel so lucky to live in London and get the chance to listen to so many different styles of music. However as I was brought up in Spain, I definitely feel a stronger influence from my Spanish side. I started my musical journey playing classical Spanish guitar and that has obviously affected the way I write.

Being a blues/Americana singer, what do you think you offer that makes you stand out from the rest?
I think my mixed heritage and different musical styles influencing my sound is definitely a factor. All I can say is that I’m passionate about what I do, and want to inspire others to be themselves and fight for what they want to do and who they want to be.

How excited are you about the current boom of UK country?
Very! It really is great that so many UK artists have decided to express themselves in different genres than people might be accustomed to.

If you could collaborate with any artist who would you choose?
That is a very hard one, as I would like to collaborate with so many fantastic artists like Lianne La Havas, Erika Badu, Bernhoft, Rag N Bone Man and many others. However If i could just choose one….it would have to be someone like Stevie Wonder or Aretha Franklin.

What is the inspiration behind your debut single ‘Player’?
I wrote Player almost 3 years ago now. I had just met someone who was a real catch but he was with someone else at the time and couldn’t make up his mind on who he wanted. So I made it easy for him and walked away and then expressed myself by writing ”Player’.

What do you hope listeners take from your music?
I hope listeners are able to identify with these emotions and experiences I am sharing and hopefully encourage many, especially young women, to express their feelings about others and also about themselves. Especially on subjects like love, lust, sexuality, self worth, empowerment.

Can fans expect an album from you soon?
I can’t say there will be an album just quite yet. What I can say is that I have few singles I’m dying to share with everyone.

Do you have any touring plans lined up?
No touring plans just quite yet, but I will definitely be organising some dates around the UK next year and hopefully around the USA too.

What do you hope to achieve over the course of your career?
Well as I have said already I hope to inspire others to express themselves and be who they want to be. And I aspire to perform in venues all around the world, collaborate with plenty of artists, record many albums and just live, breathe and eat music really.
