Maryland Teacher Mariame Toure Sylla Reported Missing For Over A Week As Police Search Continues

Authorities have reported that a teacher from Maryland who was last seen going for a walk has now been missing for over a week, with police currently conducting an active search for her. According to a statement released on Monday by the Greenbelt Police Department, 59-year-old Mariame Toure Sylla was last seen in Greenbelt, Maryland on July 29th around 8pm.

Sylla is described by officials as a Black woman standing approximately 5'5" tall and weighing around 135 pounds. In addition to her other name Madame Sylla, she is currently employed as a teacher at Dora Kennedy French Immersion School located in the Greenbelt area of the Prince George’s County Public Schools district.

“We hope and pray for Mariame Toure Sylla’s safe return,” the school district said in a statement released Friday. “We want the community at Dora Kennedy French Immersion School to know that we are thinking about them.”

A vigil was held Friday, more than a week after Sylla was first reported missing, attended by students, parents and members of the Greenbelt community.

Police Believe Sylla Went For A Walk Before Vanishing

Local station WTOP reported that Greenbelt Police Chief Rick Bowers said during the vigil that Sylla often went on walks lasting 30 to 45 minutes that always ended before dark. According to the station's report, police believe she went for a walk the day she disappeared.
