Sold sticker goes up at Bellevue Hill mansion once owned by former PM Sir William McMahon

One of Bellevue Hill’s most significant residential landholdings, the mansion once owned by former PM Sir William McMahon, has sold for about $16 million this afternoon to fashion designer Camilla Freeman-Topper and husband David Topper.

Ms Freeman-Topper and Mr Topper have been working in Los Angeles and New York, having opened their 11th Camilla and Marc boutique in Australia.

The current owners of the six-bedroom, four-bathroom home on a sprawling 1758 sqm block at No. 18 Drumalbyn Rd are Yellow Brick Road executive Jamie Schwarz and his wife, Amber, of the RPM electrical family.

The sale follows news only yesterday that a Point Piper home owned by South African-born Nandos owner and insurance mogul Richard Enthoven and his wife Karen had sold for $21.8 million.

And the Esplin family’s Palm Beach holiday home sold for about $21 million on Thursday to an eastern suburbs family.

News of today’s sale of the former McMahon mansion came courtesy of the sold sticker going up and a simultaneous Instagram announcement via buyer’s agent, Simon Cohen.

When contacted, Mr Cohen would only say he was representing an “international” buyer and wouldn’t discuss any of the details.

The sales agent, Sydney Sotheby’s International Realty principal, Michael Pallier, had been quoting the independent valuation of the property, which was $15.5 million to $17.5 million, as the price guide in the expressions of interest campaign.

When contacted tonight, Mr Pallier confirmed only that the property had sold and couldn’t confirm the price or the purchaser due to confidentiality agreements. Separate sources said the price was about $16 million.

And other sources tonight have subsequently revealed the famous fashion designer and her husband — who relocated to the US temporarily following the sale of their Belleuve Hill home for $16.5 million before Christmas — were indeed the buyers.

The Schwarzes have redecorated the home since they bought it from the estate of Lady Sonia McMahon for $9 million in 2011.

But most dramatic improvements have been to the grounds. They commissioned the renowned landscape architect, Myles Baldwin, to create the Wimbledon-style grass tennis court and the beautiful manicured grounds.

Sir William McMahon served as Prime Minister between 1971 and 1972.

It was the delightful northerly harbour views that won over Lady Sonia, who bought it for the grand sum of $123,000 in 1968 — the year their son, Julian, was born.

.The property was bought in Lady Sonia’s name and the family, including Julian and daughters Melinda and Deborah, lived there.

The Wentworth Courier had been given an exclusive tour of the property for its House of the Week feature.

The Schwarzes are moving to Mark and Anna Pasternak’s Vaucluse home, which they bought for $15.1 million in April.

The six-bedroom, five-bathroom ‘Mediterranean-inspired haven’ at 10 the Crescent is quite different to the historic Bellevue Hill mansion — it was completed only three years ago and has a pool and even a “wellness centre” a bit like a villa in Ibiza.
