Every single person has their own 9/11 stories to tell; every single person remembers the day those planes crashed into the World Trade Center. Yet, over 60 million people weren’t even born yet, so they don’t have their own story to tell.

One of our CelebMix editors, Ashley Dye, will never forget that dreadful day of 9/11. Here is her story:

“You don’t ever think that something devastating is just around the corner especially as a child, but on September 11th, 2001 – tragedy struck America in a way that won’t ever be forgotten. That day, I remember being in homeroom and the teachers were all called out of class, instructed to leave a student in charge for a few moments. That never happened, for any reason, so we were immediately curious. The staff came back within 10 minutes and the mood was somber, at this point, we didn’t know what happened, but we were told we’d be informed when we made it to our next period. For myself, that was history, and our teacher had the television rolled out. She let us watch the news and a majority of our school were children who belonged to military families and we knew the weight of what that meant for our loved ones. School ended early that day but, living on base and going to school off base, made getting home difficult. By the time we did, hours had passed. The kids on our street were scared, a lot of us couldn’t get in touch with our moms or dads who were in the service. We didn’t actually hear from my dad until that next morning when they allowed him to come home. He didn’t tell me at the time, but they were packing bags and getting everything ‘ready to go’.

“The next days were terrifying, the security on base was at an all time high, our parents were gone for hours upon hours, and a lot of us felt too afraid to ask questions; so, we just tried to be there for one another and when our parents got home from work, we appreciated that even more. One of the things I remember most clearly was the upped ‘patriotism’ that the rest of the country was feeling. For military kids, it wasn’t much different. We were used to being proud of our country, even when we weren’t all on the same page because we knew the sacrifices that were made by our own loved ones, and family friends. The entire country lost that day, from a sense of security to ones we’ve loved, and even a sense of self… So much was stolen that day, and those in other countries felt it as well. One of the things that got me through that day was my best friend Samantha, her father was in the service as well, and once we found one another that afternoon and I was able to hug her, and both of us understood the fear that we had and the comfort that we needed.”
